The smallest stag beetles (Coleoptera, Lucanidae): hidden paleodiversity in mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber from northern Myanmar

چکیده

The fossil record of stag beetles (Lucanidae), especially in Mesozoic amber, is sparse. Four additional lucanids preserved mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber from northern Myanmar are here reported. All these species included the primitive subfamily Aesalinae, and have been identified as: Protonicagus mandibularis sp. nov. (tribe Nicagini); Cretognathus minutissimus gen. et Ceratognathini); Ceratognathini indet. 1 (provisional assignment); 2 assignment). Except for , appear to be connected continent Gondwana, as with paleofauna. More interestingly, significantly smaller bodies than extant species, three them measuring less 3 mm, which makes smallest known Lucanidae. This finding congruent a trend toward miniaturization several unrelated lineages beetles, it shows hidden paleodiversity during Cretaceous.

Emergence of a superradiation: pselaphine rove beetles in mid-Cretaceous amber from Myanmar and their evolutionary implications

Pselaphinae is an exceptionally species-rich, globally distributed subfamily of minute rove beetles (Staphylinidae), many of which are inquilines of social insects. Deducing the factors that drove pselaphine diversification and their evolutionary predisposition to inquilinism requires a reliable timescale of pselaphine cladogenesis. Pselaphinae is split into a small and highly plesiomorphic sup...
